Congrats to Dr. Kamila Muchowska for winning the People’s Choice award for Best Talk at the Polonium Foundation meeting “Science: Polish Perspectives 2018” in Berlin! Her talk described her recent advances in understanding the origins of biological metabolism. This is Kamila’s second “best talk” award in the part three months.

Dr. Sreejith Varma
Congrats to Sreejith Varma on successfully defending his thesis! He is the third PhD student to graduate from the group. After a trip back to India, he will return to the lab for two months before heading off to a postdoc position at Charité Hospital in Berlin. Special thanks to jury members Prof. Marie-Christine Maurel, Dr. Cornelia Meinert and Prof. Peter Faller.

Who Will Win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2018)?
Joseph was a panelist in an ACS webinar organized by C&EN to predict the winners of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Lucas wins best poster at REGIO symposium
Congrats to Lucas Lethuillier for winning the prize for best poster at the REGIO Symposium in the Black Forest of Germany. Lucas’ poster was on the application of vibrational strong coupling to control selectivity in organic synthesis.

Kamila wins best talk prize at Franco-Czech Symposium
Congrats to Dr. Kamila Muchowska for winning the EuChemS oral communication prize at the 9th Barrande-Vitava French-Czech meeting! Her talk described her recent advances in understanding the origins of biological metabolism. Way to go, Kamila!

C&EN Talented 12
Joseph has been selected by Chemical & Engineering News for the 2018 edition of the Talented 12. This is an award for chemists worldwide under the age of 40. He will give a talk at the Talented 12 Symposium at the ACS meeting in Boston on August 20. Check out the C&EN writeup. Also check out related highlights in French here.

New visiting PhD student
Welcome to Anton Gudz, who joins us for seven months from Michel Gagné’s lab in University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill funded by an NSF Grow grant and the Chateaubriand fellowship.

Ed leaves for BASF
Congratulations and farewell to long-time group member Dr. Ed Richmond, who accepts a research position at BASF in Ludwigshafen. Ed published ten papers in the group (six as first author), with still more to come. We are grateful for his many contributions over the years, both scientific and social. He will be missed. Best of luck in the new career and come visit often!
Vuk wins poster prize at SCF-18
Vuk Vuković has won the EuCheMS poster prize at the 18th meeting of the French Chemical Society (SCF), held this week in Montpellier. His poster described the use of HFIP to enable dehydrative Friedel-Crafts reactions for a variety of alcohols. Way to go, Vuk!

Prix Jean Normant (Assistant Professor Prize)
Joseph has been awarded the 2018 Prix Jean Normant by the Organic Chemistry Division (DCO) of the French Chemical Society (SCF). The prize is awarded to an assistant professor working in France who is less than 8 years into his/her career. Congrats to all group members for their collective efforts that led to this prize!
